Bismillah

Assalaamu ‘alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

All praise and thanks be to Allah (SWT), who blessed us with the Qur’ān. Abundant  salutations be upon our beloved teacher and role model, the first Haafidh, Sayyidinaa Muhammad (SAW).

“Hifth Depression.” No, it’s not an oxymoron, but a reality in the lives of some of us who are in the process of memorising or reviewing the Glorious Qur’an. It is a downward spiral that generally occurs when we feel lazy, neglect our Qur’an and thus forget some of our dhor (back lessons) and therefore feel so terribly empty that we don’t have the inner strength to recite and correct our wrong.

By the way, the depression I’m referring to is the kind generally associated with weak eemaan (not clinical depression which requires diagnosis). As we all do when we need answers, I consulted Mufti Google ibn Wifi Al-Internet for cures. Every one of them included Qur’an. So what happens when the cure for my depression was supposed to be found in the very source of my depression? This sounds blasphemous but I have to get real with myself and be blatantly honest if I want to get to the bottom of this and heal.

Needless to say, the answer is found in the Qur’an, beautifully packaged in a podcast I came across by Sister Yasmin Mogahed entitled, “Why am I Empty?”

Your “cup” [your heart] has to be FULL of remembrance of Allah in order to be contented. Even if it’s three quarters full, it’s not enough and you’re going to feel empty. Sister Yasmin Mogahed explains it far better than I ever could, so I’ll leave you to listen to her podcast on YouTube if need be.

Shaytaan’s been using this trick where he prevents me from making du’a because “you can’t ask Allah to guide your steps if you’re not willing to move your feet.” Reminder to myself first: Make tons of du’a regardless!

If you’ve been feeling a little low on eemaan yourself, here are some du’as for depression, from the Qur’an and Sunnah:

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety.

O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men.

O Allah, there is no ease except in that which You have made easy, and You make the difficulty, if You wish, easy.

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the magnificent throne. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the Earth and Lord of the noble throne.

O Allah, it is Your mercy that I hope for, so do not leave me in charge of my affairs even for a blink of an eye and rectify for me all of my affairs. None has the right to be worshipped except You.

None has the right to be worshipped except You. How perfect You are, verily I was among the wrong-doers. [21:87]

Allah, Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him.

[All the above duas are taken from Hisnul Muslim]

Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith. [2:286]

O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit, a heart that is not humble, a supplication that is not heard and a soul that is not satisfied. [an Nasaii]

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done, and from the evil of what I have not done. [Abu Dawud]

Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]. [7:126]

O Allah, make my religion easy for me by virtue of which my affairs are protected, set right for me my world where my life exists, make good for me my Hereafter which is my resort to which I have to return, and make my life prone to perform all types of good, and make death a comfort for me from every evil. [Muslim]

Oh Allah, I seek refuge in You from the distress of trial, from the lowest level of misery, from the perversity of fate, and from the malicious rejoicing of enemies. [Bukhari and Muslim]

Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance. [18:10]

Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is the destination. [60:4]

I ask the Almighty by all of His most beautiful Names and Attributes, to strengthen our eemaan (faith), grant us ikhlaas (sincerity) and make us steadfast. I beg Him to forgive us and have rahmah (mercy) on us all. AMEEN.

Oh Allah, make the Noble Qur'an the spring of our hearts, the light of our chests and the remover of our grief and worries.

Oh Allah, make the Noble Qur’an the spring of our hearts, the light of our chests and the remover of our grief and worries.
